<BR>
It was nice talking to you last week. I hope the MN weather is treating you and your fam well!
<BR>
I am transitioning out of my position at Outset, Inc. and there are some job openings available, including an Entry-level & Mid-level position. I thought you might have some good recommendations of recent grads that could be a good fit for the Entry-level opportunity. There are a lot of packaging opportunities, as well as other branding & print design (and product, environment & web collaboration). Let me know if you have any recommendations of interested individuals. They are looking to interview for the positions as quickly as possible (as in rest of this week and next) ... so the sooner the responses, the better. I pasted the job ad details below.
<BR>
I'll try to call you later today about it too.
<BR>
Take care!

THIS IS NOT AN INTERNSHIP, THIS IS A JOB. GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR FIRST DESIGN JOB. HIRED INDIVIDUAL MUST BE WILLING TO MOVE TO DUBUQUE AREA. APPLY ASAP FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTERVIEW.
<br>
There is a job opening at shepherd incorporated (my employer) to work in the art/production department (art is part of production). the designer/illustrator will be primarily responsible for creating art used in textbooks. charts, graphs, illustrations, drawings, powerpoint slides, scanning lineart/halftones, adjusting resolution on photos, use of stock/public domain images, work with freelancers, etc. duties may (and probably will eventually) include interior book design, which entails strong sense of typography and type theory, design elements (boxes, spreads, bleeds, etc), icons, and other book art. decent amount of creative work also will be part of the job: greeting cards, calendars, coloring books, some advertising/promotional materials (posters, invites, flyers, brochures, etc). projects are never the same, and on-the-job learning is not just helpful, but required. work for several different clients, so adhesion to clients' desires and specifications is part of the job.
<br>
Mastery (or least working knowledge) of photoshop, illustrator, indesign, word, powerpoint, acrobat, internet, stuffit expander (like winzip), and quarkXpress 6.5 (all adobe products CS or better). any additional programs/abilities are a bonus (flash, dreamweaver, css, html, etc).
<br>
Production atmosphere, though high on creativity and proactive problem solving. excellent work environment, about 30 employees. nestled in beautiful downtown dubuque (60,000). lots of culture/art downtown. theatres, unique restaurants/bars, all different kinds of apartments/duplexes/houses. numerous universities/colleges. rolling hills, nice people. two hospitals and one large health clinic. 2 hours from madison, wi, 90 minutes from waterloo/cedar falls, 90 minutes from davenport, 5 hours from minneapolis, mn, 3 hours to chicago, 4 hours from menomonie, wi. benefits available, paid time-off (PTO), annual review, paid lunch, etc. small company (30).
<br>
If you are interested and/or have questions, PLEASE email me at jmindiola@shepherd-inc.com.
<br>
TO APPLY
Send a resume, cover letter, and some samples of your work (keep it under 6). if selected for an interview, bring portfolio showing your best design work (two dozen pieces would be sufficient), covering all types of design: type, publication, packaging, print, web, freelancing/personal stuff, work-related, the best of your class projects. also, samples of your ability to draw/illustrate would be helpful. if you have good publication design (book interiors, magazine spreads, annual reports, newspapers, etc), definitely highlight that; publishing is what we do here.
<br>
We currently freelance a number of illustrations, so if you can draw well, that helps the company (and you). if you decide to email your stuff (which is what i did), put everything into ONE (1) PDF. it makes it easier on everyone if all your stuff is in one file.
<br>
Oh, i forgot to tell you: shepherd incorporated is an all mac environment, working in OS X. we have one or two PCs, but 99% of your time will be on a mac. if you're not comfortable with that, find a mac near you and get comfortable. they're pretty easy, and a lot more fun. some people that work here bring their own mice to use. we have wacom drawing tablets on hand, plus a number of printers/scanners/copiers/faxers. we work on a network and FTP every day.
<br>
If you have any other questions about shepherd, about my daily duties, etc, don't hesitate to ask.
